In IELTS Writing Task 1, you are faced with a table, graph, chart, whatever data that you need to elaborate. In order to write a concise but complete essay, there are some important details you can use, especially about the language use.
1. Introducing the graph
You can begin by writing one or two sentences at most to state what are you writing about. Most of the time, you can just paraphrase from the question (title of the graph) and use these language of introduction, for example:
The provided illustration describes …
2. Giving an overall outlook / overview
After the introductionary sentence, you can follow this up with a short note on the general trend / important details of the data. You can use words such as “Overall” as a good example: “Overall, the number of cars sold during the last 10 years (2000-2010) showed a constant decrease”.
3. Describing changes of data
This is most important when you have a set of data where things have changed after a certain period of time. The words increase and decrease are very common, thus to improve your lexical resource, feel free to use their synonyms like
4. Using adverbs / adjectives to improve the vocabulary
Aside from just using the synonyms, a supplementary word like adjectives (located before noun, typically it is adjective + noun) and adverbs (located after verb) can be your weapon.
For example the word significant can have two forms: significant (adj.) or significantly (adv.)
By using significant + increase – you are mentioning an increase that is considered to be significant (noun)
Whereas if you use increase + significantly – you are describing an increase that happen so significantly (verb)
