Complete IELTS Speaking Part 1 Topics; 700++ Questions! :D

Hi there, in this post we’re going to talk about IELTS speaking topics, as we know we have three parts of the test, and they usually have different topics for each one. However, part 2 topics are actually quite similar to part 3, because part 3 is an extension of part 2, but you’re going to discuss it in deeper detail.

Anyway, if you remember well, the part 1 of IELTS Speaking usually asks about common questions about yourself. So ideally, you know the best what will be the answer, because it is about you. By the way, click on the red texts to get the detailed questions! So some common topics for IELTS Speaking part 1 are:

  • Hometown / Accommodation / Country
    So questions like
    “Where is your hometown?”
“What is famous from your country?”
“Do you live in a house or an apartment?”

These questions will be very common, so try to be prepared to be asked related to cities, countries, and houses. Remember that if you want to give a specific name of a city for instance, you have to describe shortly where it is / what is it about. For example from Indonesia, you were born in Jakarta (the capital city). I suggest you can add “My hometown is Jakarta, which is the capital city of Indonesia. It is located in West Java, Java Island, Indonesia.” With this, you can explain uncommon city names to the examiner, who might not be too familiar with your city.

    “Who is your best friend?”
“How many family members are there in your family?”
“What is your responsibility in your housework duty?”
    “Do you like children?”

Questions like this can trigger you to describe people, maybe describing a person that you know well, so give a short explanation about their character, physical appearance, and things that connect you together.

“What kind of music do you listen to?”
‘What is a book that you can recommend for everyone?”
“Do you still read magazines / newspapers?”
“How often do you usually watch movies?”

In this case, the questions are mostly about media and entertainment world, so the more you know, the better. Pick some artists, actors, movies, or books that you like and you can explain well. These will be super useful during the test day for sure. We better prepare right?

  • Technology / Computers / Internet
“What is the most useful electronic that you have right now?”
“Do you prefer to work on a laptop or a computer?”
    “What is your favorite website?”

Questions like this can be challanging, but you can show off your vocabulary set by using technological terms that can be specific, but common to everyone. For example, you are explaining about the portability of a laptop, but then the downside is that it is not as powerful as a computer. The graphic card, processor, or computing power, for instance are optimized for a smaller size, that is why we don’t have as much power. With these vocabs, you can surely impress the examiner with your calmness.

  • Work / Job change / Career / Volunteer work
“What is your job at the moment?”
“Do you plan to change job sometime soon?”
“What do you want to do in the next 10 years?”
“What kind of volunteer work that you like to do?”

Yeah I know, these questions sound like interview questions for job applications, and yeah you might already be tired of these (some of you), but anyway this is still important. You don’t have to answer professionally, you can be more casual than when you answer this to your hiring manager for example. If you would like to make up details (for example like future plans) feel free to do this, because not everyone have plans for their future career for example. You can also answer with I don’t know yet, because …

“Do you think your high school can be considered a good school?”

For some people, you might not be in university yet, but you will still get this question. How to deal with this? You can explain that you are not yet enrolled in university, but if you can choose, you want to study X degree, or if you already have plans to enter X degree, that is okay as well.
