Hi everyone, so we’ve discussed the common topics for most of the IELTS Speaking test, but today I will share with you 50+ questions that I’ve gathered from various sources + information from my students that took the exam during 2018-2024. This list will be updated regularly so keep this in your bookmark! I will divide the questions per topic.

Advertisement

1. Describe an advertisement that persuaded you to buy a product. You should say

  • What advertisement it was
  • Was it shown on TV, radio or newspaper
  • What was good about that advertisement

Explain why you think that advertisement made the product seem attractive.

2. Describe an advertisement that is very famous in your country. You should say.

  • What advertisement it is
  • What product is being advertised
  • Why is it famous
  • Do you think that the product sells well?

Art

3. Talk about a painting you would like to have in your home.You should say:

  • what is it
  • how you know about it
  • how much it would cost you

and explain why you want to have it in your home.

4. Describe a famous art piece that many people should enjoy. You can say:

  • What it is
  • Where it is stored
  • Why it is famous
  • And whether you have ever seen the piece

5. Talk about a musical instrument that everyone should learn.

  • What is the instrument
  • How to play it
  • Do you able to play the instrument
  • And why is it good for people to learn this instrument

Books

6. Talk about a book you are reading now or have read recently. You should say:    

  • How and why you got it
  • How long you it took you to read it or how long you have been reading it
  • What kind of book it is

And say if you would like to read something else similar or not, and why

7. Talk about a book that you would want to write in the future. You should say:    

  • What is it about and the title
  • What kind of book it is
  • What kind of audience do you aim for

8. Talk about a book you have never read but would like to read. You should mention:

  • How well known it is
  • Why you would like to read it
  • Why you have never read it before

And say how you think it will compare to other books you have read

9. Talk about a book that you find it difficult to understand. You should mention

  • What book is it
  • Why is it difficult to understand
  • What kind of people would like that book
  • And talk how to understand difficult books easier

Business

10. Describe a small business you want to start.You should say:

  • what business it would be
  • when you want to start it
  • why you have not you started it yet

and explain why you want to start this business.

11. Describe your ideal workplace. You should say:

  • What kind of facilities will it have
  • Where the location should be
  • What kind of environment are you expecting

12. Describe a popular business idea in your country:

  • What does this business sell?
  • How large should this business be?
  • What about the employers needed?

13. Describe a family business that you know of.

  • What does this business sell
  • How large is this business
  • Where is this business based
  • And whether the family will continue on doing their business

Changes

14. Describe a positive change in your life. You should say:

  • what the change was about
  • when it happened
  • describe details of the change happened

and describe how it affected you later in life.

15. Describe a life changing event for you or someone else. You should say:

  • What the change was about
  • When it happened
  • How did it impact your/his/her life

16. Describe a positive change in your country that you notice recently. You should say.

  • What was the change about
  • When it happened
  • Describe details of the change
  • Whether people like the change or not

17. Describe a positive change for the people in the younger generation compared to the previous ones. You should say:

  • What is the change about
  • Why do you think it happened
  • Whether the previous generation liked the change or not

City

18. Describe your favourite city or a city you have visited that you like very much. You should say:

  • What its name is and where it is
  • when you visited it.
  • why you liked it

And what the major attractions in this city are

19. Describe a city that can be considered a model city for the people. You should say:

  • What its name is and where it is
  • Whether you have visited it
  • What characteristics that should be copied by other cities
  • Whether people will enjoy living there

20. Describe a city that is not famous, but should be visited more.

  • Where is it
  • Why is it not famous
  • What are the main attractions of the city
  • Whether you have visited the city yourself.

21. Describe a city that is rich in history.

  • Where is it
  • Is it famous
  • What are the main features of the city
  • Whether you have visited the city

Company

22. Describe an organisation or a company that you know. Please say

  • How big is it?
  • Do you find this company to be successful? Why?
  • What can you say about the working environment there?

23. Describe a government organisation that is well known. Please say:

  • How big is it?
  • What sector is that organisation?
  • What can you say about people’s opinions?

Decision

24. Describe an important decision you have made. You should say:

  • what the decision was
  • why you made that choice
  • who helped you make the choice

and explain why the decision was so important.

25. Describe a time when your family gathered for an important discussion. You should say:

  • What was the problem
  • Who were involved
  • What was the final outcome

and explain why the discussion was so important.

26. Describe a time when your country’s government decided on something important for the people.

  • What was the problem
  • Who were affected
  • What was the final outcome
  • And whether you support the decision or not

Electronic Devices

27. Describe a useful electronic device you would like to own. You should say:

  • what it is
  • how it would help your life
  • if it would be expensive to buy

and explain why you would like it.

28. Describe a piece of electronic equipment that you have.You should say:

  • what it is
  • what you used it for
  • how long you have used it

and describe why it is important to you

29. Describe a piece of electronic equipment that you find useful.You should say:

  • what it is
  • how you learned to use it
  • how long you have had it

and explain why you find this piece of electronic equipment useful.

Environment

30. Describe an environmental problem or event.You should say:

  • What it is
  • Where is it happening
  • What problems it causes

31. Describe a natural disaster that occurs often in your country. You could say:

  • How often does it happen
  • What problem it causes
  • What are the preventive actions

32. Describe a place in nature which is protected / conserved. You can say:

  • What kind of animals / plants are in there
  • Whether people could visit the place freely

33. Describe a famous mountain that you know. You can say.

  • What are the main attractions of the mountain

34. Describe a famous study tour destination in your country. You can say

  • Why do schools like to go there
  • What can people learn from that place
  • Whether it is expensive to visit the place

Exciting Experience

35. Describe an exciting experience you’ve had. You should say:

  • when it was
  • where you were
  • what it was

And explain what made this experience especially exciting.

Family

36. Talk about the last time your whole family got together. You should mention:

  • Where you met
  • What you did together
  • How long you spent together

And say if you would like to do the same thing again soon or not, and why

37. Describe a family member that you get on well with. You should mention:

  • What their personality is like
  • What things they like doing
  • If they have any strong dislikes

And say why you think you have a good relationship

38. Describe one of your relatives. You should say:

  • What that person looks like
  • What that person’s character is like
  • What they are doing at the moment

And say which other relative of yours they are most similar to

39. Describe a common activity that you do as a family. You can say:

  • What kind of activity it is
  • How often are you doing it
  • How would you do it
  • Whether you enjoy the activity

Food

40. Describe a famous food from your hometown or country. You should say:

  • What it looks like
  • What it tastes like
  • When and how it is usually eaten

And say why you think it is famous

41. Describe a food that can be made by people who start to learn how to cook.

  • What is the dish
  • Why people can learn this dish easily
  • How is it made

42. Describe a food that people believe to be unhealthy.

  • What is the food
  • Why people thinks it is unhealthy
  • Will people’s perspectives change?

43. Describe a food that can be eaten by babies.

  • What kind of food it is
  • Why is it good for babies

44. Describe a delicious food that is also hated by many people.

Friends

45. Describe a friend who has played an important part in your life. You should say:   

  • How you met this person
  • How long you have known him or her
  • The kind of things you do or have done together

And explain why this person has been important in your life

46. Describe a time when you had conflict with your friend:

  • Who is she/he
  • What was the conflict about
  • How was it resolved
  • And whether you are still friends with him/her

47. Describe a friend you had in primary school. You should say:

  • What that person was like
  • How long you were friends for
  • What things you did together

And say whether you are still in contact with that person or not, and why

48. Describe an important quality in a friend.

  • What quality it is
  • Why should people be like that
  • Is it common for people to have that quality
  • Do you have a friend that has that characteristic

Clothes

49. Describe your favourite piece of clothing. You should say:

  • Where you got it
  • Do you often wear it
  • When you wear it

And explain why it is your favourite piece of clothing.

50. Describe a popular clothing trend from the past. You should say:

  • What kind of fashion trend it is
  • What kind of people wear it
  • When was it popular
  • Why the trend subsided

51. Describe a piece of clothing that you can only wear during special seasons.

  • What kind of clothes is it
  • Where can you buy it
  • In what season do the clothes usually worn

52. Describe a piece of clothing for a special ceremony or occassion.

  • What kind of clothes is it
  • When would you wear the clothes
  • What are the differences with the other clothes
  • Where can you buy it
